A Feaux Niner Confesses Maybe Not So Romantic Era of Old 09 by Esteban ERik Stipnieks
I lay in bed it is 11 or so. The sound of high bypass air is a high pitched rattle and whine as the outer fringes of a fan encounter super sonic airflow. It is a freighter MD-11 departing. The airplane wears the badges of UPS. The moan reminds me I stayed up to late. On other mornings I can hear the sound as I lay in m bed I can feel the vibration in my bed from the slab and the background sound with the right engines and cold mornings creates another sound as steel framed real glass windows vibrate as combusted air leaves the high energy core of modern jet engines. I have written wistfully about the days of three person flight decks, actually having to navigate with a fourth member the vast Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Then it comes to a different stark reality.
I see this.
http://www.postcardpost.com/br206.jpg In less then a minute the house that I live in would bear the brunt of 4 JT-4 Turbo jets no bypass air just exploding air after going through two turbines. The jet fuel had exploded with the fuel flow the big rumble sending each mass of vibrations. 100% of the thrust of those bad boys came from exploding fuel. The noise was so extreme that they had to separate the flow with organ pipe like things it only partially reduced. I know this place rattled the laws of physics creating additional noise from the windows.Wistful memories of the Braniff International Ticket counter circa 1980 as I remember it, a whole wing of the old terminal walking to and from airplanes without a jet way the magical beasts DC-8, 707 oh my! Individual takeoffs at the wrong time can even be annoying for plane nuts. I can imagine what this place was like when its previous inhabitants had to crank up KTSA playing Elvis the Beatles or the Beach Boys Really really really loud and still feel the vibration for 4 JT-4 turbo jets taking a bunch rich folks to Mexico for Margaritas sun and fun.
