The Web Bock’s Car and the Enola Gay: Essay by Esteban Erik Stipnieks
Let me direct with the reader. I believe the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while being horrific were tragically necessary to stop a blood bath. On the continent of Europe I had family on both sides. A command sergeant major who lies in the hallowed ground of Ft. Sam National Cemetery as a boy witnessed white phosphorous dropped by Allied Bombers burning limbs off people alive. Could it be one of those bomber’s my great uncle maintained? There is also a real possibility a base my father knew as a TDY location was a base his eldest brother knew as a Nazi POW. A Vietnam era pilot commented ultimately a nuclear weapon and standard bomb only differ in scale they kill maim injure and horrify in many similar ways leave in their wake death it’s a matter of scale. World War II had many causes the historical record supports that WWII ended with the dramatic exclamation mark with the bomb dropping.
http://shop.history.com/detail.php?p=68280 is a great documentary about how the last mission of WWII was necessary ironically to end the war.The wonderful thing about the web is that it brings much information for the researcher to develop and process there is quite frankly much primary source material for those who are willing to hunt. I actually intend to make your life easier and do a whole lot of hunting for you and post the links so you can get the highlights or many links that shed the most light. I will add commentary as we follow I am directing this journey through history on the web and pointing out things of interest along the way. I will highlight the men, the location and the airplane.
Probably one of the most interesting people in the whole saga that get least amount of notice of is Jacob Beser. Beser is the only man who flew both Atomic bomb missions on the strike airplanes. He appears in the made for TV movie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xVrzC44wxg (2 minutes in) the reality is Jacob Beser cuts a far more complex figure. The most intriguing part of the movie is its dance with reality and fiction. Beser cuts a figure much like the nation of Israel a geek through and through but ultimately not someone you would want to take on in a fight even you are the biggest baddest bully on the block! http://beserfoundation.org/New%20Folder/Jacob%20Beser%20Interviews/Miscellaneous%20Interviews.pdf you get the feeling of a man both direct analytical precise in thinking brutally honest and brave. http://www.beserfoundation.org/New%20Folder/Enola%20Gay%20Crew%20Interviews/Beser.pdf his criticism of Nazi scientists rings true in the interview done within 20 years of the event. Beser’s opinion on the big controversy is interesting. Beser had a ringside seat to the formation of the biggest controversy regarding the atomic bomb drops and that is Major Sweeney’s conduct during the Nagasaki raid. http://www.mputtre.com/id45.html more on that later. Beser stands as an interesting foil for the central character involved with the actual bomb drops. There is a ton of info on the site
http://beserfoundation.org/ his children have done well in preserving much. This a gold mine of primary source info and you can spend hours on here.
Now who was in Charge of the all this, It was Paul Tibbets. Paul Tibbets while associated wit ht the bomb drop on Hiroshima had been elsewhere in the war
http://vimeo.com/132705 (6:05) reveals that his actions in Europe and in Africa are also made it to the silver screen previously in the video we see the trio of Tibbets, Van Kirk, and Fereebee green in the same B-17 together. At the 12 minute mark we see wheeler dealer side of Tibbets come to full view. http://www.youtube.com/user/wtbrooks3#p/u/5/0AOpWBItU6I played by Patrick Duffy. http://www.mputtre.com/id45.html The interesting part of the movie Enola Gay with Patrick Duffy highlights the youth of Tibbets and the phenomenal power he was granted. Tibbets could also be incredibly unconventional when the task called for it. He taught women to fly the B-29 http://cotteyphile.com/dora/ he could also be straight laced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EWnWDyo91k. Tibbets was a combination of pilot and personnel person and person for making things from scratch. He found a way to keep bombs falling on Nazis under awkward conditions. I am going to allow the readers of this essay to see more details at their own pace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iQ2pyEZefs (Trailer) http://eaavideo.org/video.aspx?v=1297307867 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9f-6Etlq7k http://michaeldsellers.weearth.com/2010/04/02/studs-terkel-interviews-the-pilot-of-the-enola-gay-paul-tibbets/The Beser foundation has another interview with him on transcript. The Beser foundations interviews due to their age are probably the most interesting artifact. We see both sides of Tibbets displayed. His book was revised after a controversy flared up
http://www.amazon.com/Flight-Enola-Gay-Paul-Tibbets/dp/0942397118/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1291673701&sr=1-5I will at this point wade into the controversy of the Nagasaki Mission V Hiroshima I will also deal with the nature of Bob Lewis. Ferebee (
http://www.mishalov.com/Ferebee.html ),Van Kirk http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1086088,00.html along with Tibbets were the core of Composite group together. They had been shot at together. The Hiroshima bombing occurred under better weather conditions the pilot in command Tibbets had been combat tested more then once. Furthermore the last minute decision to assemble the guts of bomb in flight made the mission a far harder target for the Murphy’s laws of combat. http://www.military-quotes.com/norsk/murphy.htm Also in the fine tradition of Murphy the strike flight that could most cope with Murphy’s laws of combat was immune to them. The crew least prepared to deal with Murphy had Murphy enter Bock‘s car. http://www.mputtre.com/id45.html Before criticism of Sweeney gets loud and heavy bear in mind despite his rank he had lacked the experience Tibbets had and the Nagasaki mission did as Beser points the bomb centered on more the industrial guts of the city rather then a residential area. This is also not the only controversy about the two bomb drop missions. What is interesting to note is that in one of the books written about the bombing of Hiroshima it is recounted that the very explosive charges were kicked looking like bean bags as the Enola Gay was loaded by a crew member. So the Enola Gay was remarkably free of Murphy.Captain Bob Lewis had nose pushed out of joint. He had been assigned the plane that would name be named the Enola Gay his bombadier and his navigator were replaced by old buddies of Tibbets. There comment about my God is another controversial element. This is highlighted some of the sites. It is my opinion that the depiction of Lewis in the Movie Enola Gay is probably the most accurate in terms of mentality though how Tibbets dismissed this was very different then the movie Enola Gay portrayed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGNtJvewtzk BBC has the actual exchange. (6:28) dramatized of course. Tensions were also exacerbated at take off (in my opinion) seen at part (3:14-3:22). Lewis’s point about wishing the bombs were ready sooner strike home. How many Marines would have lived if the bomb had been used on Iwo? The idea he brings fourth of bombing Iwo Jima had the bomb been sooner is actually a surprising insight. (see Beser foundation)The bombs that ended World War II and revealed most completely the horror of war were dropped by primarily young men very young men (under 30). Tibbets was a rebel son who named the airplane for his mother. Probably the most interesting take is from Lewis who was a hot pilot he bemoaned the fact the bomb was not developed soon enough to be dropped on Iwo Jima. Pg 20 of his interview from Beser foundation. The uniting theme is get the blasted war over. What we found about Much of the lore straight from the horses mouth is Dutch Van Kirk
http://www.youtube.com/user/uwgucm#p/u/33/8vYwY5nQUYU the whole interview provides interesting insights. You can go to the channel and see the whole interview. Parsons who was on the Enola Gay was the old man of the group. Due to his early death not much is about him. Imagine being over 40 in an airplane commanded by someone under 30 and the co pilot. The recordings from the surviving crew and transcripts indicate a universal degree of praise for Parsons. It was his decision that made the Enola Gay’s mission much safer. His thoughts on the crew would have been interesting. What we do have is biography with less then full source material on the web http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=1557501203/theatomicarchive/#_We see the men as older men the family of Beser did us the service of offering a freeze frame far closer to the event. There is older film of the men close to the event but there is woefully little of it. So we are stuck with the interviews of the older men and the record 15 years after the bomb drop. We have the recollections of men looking back. We also have some historical records of orders cut that were declassified. The phenomenal amount of info though allows inferences.
The Geography involved is also very interesting. With Google earth Check out Wendover Utah. You have a bleak place that by all accounts was isolated. Look at Google earth even today. Sheesh it was out there great place to train guys who would deliver a super secret weapon. Then you had Tinian itself.
http://www.youtube.com/user/WWIIPacificHistory#p/a/u/1/M2cm9uwO3Ms shows you the present state of the island which bears little resemblance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxfxCSaeWmA http://www.panoramio.com/photo/13752969 was taken half a mile south and east of the lift off point of the Enola Gay. The Enola Gay took off to the east over the rugged coast line the lat long of a good approximate lift off point was15° 4'38.87"N
145°39'0.07"E
Tinian was a place of war once the busiest airport in the world then abandoned as its time on the world stage revealing very little of its role as launching point of the furious climax of an air-war
http://www.norfolk.gov/MacArthurMemorial/images/tinian_airfield/North_Field_preMay45_weblg.jpg (strong contrast) http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2907391Finally we have the airplane. In the midst of research it came up that the Col that denied the initial request for completely brand new B-29s was greeted by Hap Arnold with the words Major. The B-29s that Tibbets had were not standard. The B-29 had pyromaniac issues the original carbureted engines.
http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=2874 the birds that were flown were truly silver plate fuel injection, stripped except for rear guns, improved cowlings which further reduced engine fires and different props. The hottest hands with the B-29 got for his group the best version at the time of the B-29. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SilverplateBottom line it took 2 atomic bombs and a Soviet Invasion to finally end the bloodshed of WWII. There is a lot on the web I have pointed out the resources that put a lot of real flesh and heart and mind of the people involved. We can use computers to explore much of this moment in history.
